About the role
The Demurrage Team Lead is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the demurrage function within Ampol. This includes the analysis, negotiation, and settlement of demurrage claims, ensuring that Ampol's commercial interests are protected and optimized.
The team plays a critical role in enhancing the profitability of Ampol's Trading & Shipping operations by providing detailed ship and voyage analysis that empowers Traders and Charterers to make informed decisions. It’s pivotal in mitigating financial risks, reducing unnecessary costs, and continuously improving processes to drive more favorable economic outcomes.
The Team Lead of demurrage manages a team of demurrage analysts of varying experience who are executing the “business as usual” (BAU) aspects of day-to-day demurrage as well as ancillary claims. They are a subject matter expert and can handle demurrage claims across multiple hydrocarbon commodities. Having a team of varying experience, the team lead will know how to distribute workloads evenly, handle claims. This position also involves mentoring and developing team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support Ampol's strategic goals.
Key responsibilities
Tracking of ship voyages to determine demurrage exposure and areas for recovery
- Process and analyse each shipment’s summary of movements to identify opportunities to recover demurrage.
- Work closely with the Cargo and Vessel Operators in order to gather the information required to reconcile demurrage, prepare and defend demurrage claims.
- Keep track of payables and receivables and provide monthly updates to the Operations and Commercial teams regarding outstanding claims.
Managing demurrage payables with Ship Owners and Third Parties directly or via Ship Brokers
- Review and develop demurrage assessment.
- Negotiate the claim to generate a positive outcome for Ampol/Caltex.
Managing demurrage receivables with third parties and obtaining payment
- Calculate, generate and send demurrage claims.
- Develop relationship to help recovery and minimise outstanding payments.
Working with Trading, Shipping and Operations
- Provide input about demurrage trends such as ports/berths experiencing delays and typical time, problematic counterparties for claims, etc.
- Identify and suggest new areas and ways to negotiate recoveries.
- Provide advice to Traders and Charterers regarding non favourable terms.
Providing subject-matter advice to the Contracts team regarding Demurrage and Laytime wording.
Maintain demurrage data integrity in IMOS and Allegro
- Update the relevant shipping information in IMOS.
- Review the shipments information in Allegro.
- Record costs in Allegro.
Management of demurrage ancillary functions
- Includes management of invoicing, interfacing with accounts teams and 3rd parties.
Team Leadership
- Provide direction, teaching, coaching and mentoring to Demurrage Analysts to ensure the team can deliver business objectives.
- Take a lead role in identifying and solving problems with key stakeholders across the Ampol Group or escalating as appropriate by actively participating in cross function discussions on complex claim issues.
- Ensure team is executing strategic priorities, managing key risks and optimising use of available resources.
- The Operation Manager, will provide insights and guidance to determine overall strategic direction, and the Demurrage Team Lead will translate these into actionable business plans for delivery by the team.
- Ensure team is adhering to company, country and local business requirements, ensuring compliance and acting when necessary.
Qualifications & experience
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Finance or Business or related discipline or relevant operational experience.
- Demurrage analyst experience of minimum 5 years.
- Commercial experience in the oil industry and/or petroleum trading companies in areas such as Supply planning, operations
- or bulk shipping preferred.
- Exposure to Trading and Shipping IT systems such as IMOS.
- People management skills and coaching/mentoring experience.
Skills & Knowledge
- In depth knowledge of the Petroleum GT&Cs and Shipping GT&Cs such as Asbatankvoy, BP Voy, Shell Voy, etc.
- In depth understanding of Supply Chain marine functions.
- Understanding of the international shipping requirements and restrictions.
- Competition and consumer act compliant and has an understanding of the requirements of other relevant regulations.
- Sound and cross-functional understanding of the Petroleum Supply Chain process including key drivers of value, with strong
- Negotiation skills and keen attention to detail.
- People leadership, coaching, mentoring.
- Meticulous attention to detail is required.
- Ability to collaborate across the business.
- Analyse data and metrices to identify area for improvement and implement changes
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
