About the role:
Reporting to the Laboratory Superintendent and based at our Kurnell terminal laboratory, the role of the chemist contributes leading a team of Chemists to complete the Laboratory sampling and testing required by Ampol, to produce and manage finished products to the required specifications in a safe and efficient manner. Also provides value-adding quality and technical support (eg: audits, Laboratory innovation, instrument support, investigations, and refinery gross margin initiatives) to the Kurnell Terminal and greater business.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage and motivate team performance by developing, appraising, coaching and disciplining team members utilising team leadership principles, stewardship of LPS and the PMP.
- Coordinate the day-to-day Laboratory work schedule to ensure it is completed in a timely and accurate manner. This also include bench work as required.
- Monitor performance and advise when results are outside specification or off-target. Issue test reports (both NATA and otherwise), authorise release of products in accordance with specifications to both internal and external customers.
- Troubleshoot with team members to identify, recommend, and potentially implement solutions to issues that arise in the laboratory. This may include quality, shipping problems and instrument issues.
- Provide timely technical support relating to products, intermediates, test properties and procedures to customers. This will often involve sending unusual samples for external testing and maintaining the system to log these results for further use by the customer.
- Ensures the team is properly skilled and resourced to handle the work, establishing training requirements (for each team member) and acts as an assessor for specific training.
- Carry out training of Laboratory Chemists as required.
About you:
You are a team player with a positive can-do attitude and have minimum 5 years’ experience as a Chemist leading or coordinating teams or laboratory operations.
You have a strong focus on safety and can demonstrate strong technical and problem-solving skills with the ability to successfully handle high pressure work situations carrying out multiple tasks and priorities.
Key skills and experience:
- Tertiary qualification in science or bachelor’s degree in science (Chemistry desirable)
- Experience in a Chemist Team Leader or similar position in a hydrocarbon facility, pharmaceutical or testing laboratories in a leadership capacity
- Practical exposure of emergency response situations
- Experience with managing laboratory equipment, in particular routine maintenance and troubleshooting
- Thorough understanding of Laboratory test methods and procedures.
- Demonstrated strong technical/professional problem-solving skills.
- Strong safety and occupational health focus.
- Good understanding of Laboratory instruments
