About the role:

We are looking for an experienced category manager to join our Merchandise Team, leading the development of a consistent food offer at Ampol across our stores with an on-site kitchen, across takeaway, restaurant and Truckstop formats. Joining our collaborative, cross-functional team, this role is an initial 12-month contract with the potential to go permanent in the future. Reporting into the Head of Trade, Fresh, this is a unique role, driving key pillars for growth as you have full P&L accountability, and the ability to make an impact. You will drive Category thought leadership, develop actionable insights to deliver against Ampol’s category objectives and challenge the status quo on the value of our kitchen sites.


We are based at Sydney CBD, but we will be undertaking a move to Alexandria mid-2021, flexible work from home options are on offer.


Key responsibilities;

  • Develop the strategy for Hot Kitchens across our existing network and new sites
  • Monitor trade and financial performance of all kitchen sites to drive recommendations for continuous improvement
  • Project manage the implementation of new offer and concepts for kitchen sites whilst ensuring implementation and rollout timelines are met
  • Manage existing supplier relationships in relation to the purchase of specific products at supplier level and identify new supply partners to ensure innovation in range as well as opportunities for improved sales and profitability for stores
  • Drive strong kitchen food sales, promotional programs and innovation in hot kitchen categories
  • Work collaboratively with the Food Service Development Manager to optimise sales and promotional activity, from successful reviews of our current range of food offerings
  • Inspire thought leadership with internal teams to lead brand, product and sales strategy based in data and insights, influencing on the value of our hot kitchen sites


About you:

You are reliable, enthusiastic and highly motivated; we are looking for a team player who is excited to learn about different aspects of the business as we develop and expand your career opportunities. You have previous experience in Food Service Category management, or a related discipline, and are highly skilled in retail operations in a convenience, supermarket, hot kitchen or QSR environment.


You have a detailed understanding of P&L drivers from both store and market level perspectives matched with an ability to drive change and cost efficiencies. You will have a sound financial and commercial acumen, strong influencing, negotiation and communication skills as well as the ability to manage time and workload independently and to cope with multiple priorities.


Skills and experience:

  • Management of fresh food waste and shrink
  • Commercial acumen, driving optimisation
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Current driving licence
  • Understanding of recipe preparation to reach a final build cost
  • Promotion and or range modelling experience
  • A strong background in data analysis and the ability to translate data into opportunity for growth
  • An innate level of self-drive and autonomy
